Book review: “White House: Wit, Wisdom and Wisecracks” by Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton

This book of presidential quotes is a very interesting source for anyone interested in the US history. It narrates the lives and stories of the presidents of that country and gives us not only the most meaningful quotes, but also some relatively unknown ones. Some of these are extremely funny and some others can be extremely dangerous if taken out of context.

Complementing the book are Richard Jolley’s funny cartoons about the presidents.

I am sure that you have a favorite US president. I particularly enjoyed all the quotes that George Bush gave us, such as

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we … They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”

The book is pretty much up to date, including Barack Obama.

Buy this book and you will be referencing to it for years to come, to remember the thoughts of brilliant minds like Kennedy, Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Wilson or Truman.

Este libro de citas presidenciales es una fuente muy interesante para cualquier persona interesada en la historia de los Estados Unidos. Narra las vidas y las historias de los presidentes de ese país y nos da no sólo las citas más significativas, sino también algunas que son relativamente desconocidas. Algunas son muy divertidas y algunas otras pueden ser extremadamente peligrosas si se toman fuera de contexto.

Complementando el libro están las divertidas caricaturas de Richard Jolley acerca de los presidentes.

Estoy seguro de que tú tienes un presidente favorito de los Estados Unidos. A mí me gustaron en particular todas las frases que George Bush nos dio, como

“Nuestros enemigos son innovadores y tienen recursos, y nosotros también… Ellos nunca dejan de pensar en nuevas maneras de dañar a nuestro país y a nuestra gente, y nosotros tampoco.”

El libro se encuentra bastante actualizado, incluyendo a Barack Obama.

Compra este libro y estarás usándolo como referencia durante años para recordar los pensamientos de mentes brillantes como Kennedy, Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Wilson o Truman.

 Many years before Salma Hayek, Diego Luna, Eugenio Derbez, Paz Vega and Penelope Cruz, there was Henry Darrow.

And if Hollywood´s latino personalities think they have it tough today, they should read Darrow´s biography, titled “Lightning in the Bottle.”

If you don´t remember Darrow´s name, you will surely remember this one: Manolito Montoya.

Manolito appeared in the High Chaparral TV Series and he was a funny but noble character who came from a great Mexican family. Jan Pippins and Henry Darrow describe him with the following words: “Manolito had to be credible as a friendly peon, deadly bandido, joking reprobate, teasing (and somewhat contrite) son, Sonoran blue blood, protective brother and fearless Indian fighter.” Quite a package!

Needless to say, Manolito was a great success of the TV series and to us kids growing up in Mexico, Manolito was about the only reason to watch the show. We all loved every time he saved the day and we all laughed at all the crazy things he would do, wishing we could grow up to be just like him.

Little did we know that Darrow was not really Mexican, but Puerto Rican. We also did not know about the tremendous obstacles he had to overcome to become Manolito. Reading the book, I realized that Darrow had economical, health, cultural and ethical burdens that could have ripped apart his life; yet, he endured and overcame all these obstacles.

If Manolito was an inspiration as a Mexican kid growing up, Darrow´s life has become a source of encouragement now that I am a grown up.

Muchos años antes que Salma Hayek, Diego Luna, Eugenio Derbez, Paz Vega y Penélope Cruz, estuvo Henry Darrow.

Y si las figuras latinas de Hollywood piensan que su trayectoria ha sido dura hoy en día, deberían leer la biografía de Darrow, titulada “Lightning in the Bottle”.

Si no recuerdas el nombre de Darrow, seguramente recordarás este: Manolito Montoya.

Manolito aparecía en la serie de televisión de El Gran Chaparral y era un personaje divertido pero noble que venía de una gran familia mexicana. Jan Pippins y Henry Darrow lo describen con las siguientes palabras: “Manolito tenía que ser creíble como un peón amable; un bandido mortal; un travieso bromista; un hijo fastidioso (y algo contrito); la sangre azul de Sonora; un hermano protector y un valiente combatiente de indios.” ¡Todo un paquete!

No es necesario decir que Manolito fue un gran éxito de la serie televisiva y para nosotros, los niños que crecíamos en México, Manolito era prácticamente la única razón para ver el programa. Nos encantaba verlo cada vez que salvaba el día y nos reíamos de todas las cosas locas que hacía, deseando poder crecer para ser como él.

No sabíamos que Darrow no era mexicano, sino puertorriqueño. Tampoco sabíamos acerca de los tremendos obstáculos que tuvo que superar para convertirse en Manolito. Al leer el libro, me di cuenta de que Darrow tuvo obstáculos económicos, de salud, culturales y éticos que podrían haber destrozado su vida y, sin embargo, él soportó y venció todos sus problemas.

Si Manolito fue una inspiración para un niño mexicano, la vida de Darrow se ha convertido en una fuente de motivación ahora que soy un adulto.

Book review: ‘The Flower Child – La Niña Flor’ by Deborah Eve Alastra

The Flower Child, now available in hardback,  is about a young flower child that loses her best friend.

Did you ever lose a friend when you were a child? If you did, or if one of your children did, you can understand this can be a terrible and stressful event.

Children lose friends due to relocation, divorce, illness or even death. Some might blame themselves for the loss and they need emotional support to help them understand and deal with the loss. This is a wound that can last for many years.

In ‘The Flower Child – La Niña Flor,’ Dashi has lost her best friend, Rousseau the Rose. Rousseau is never coming back and Dashi will have to live with that fact.

The story helps young children learn to handle this type of loss and demonstrates, as hard as it seems, that life goes on and new friends are made. The book has a very happy ending; a young child in this situation will benefit from the optimistic perspective.

Deborah has also illustrated the book with beautiful whimsical watercolors. She has a very personal style. ‘The Flower Child – La Niña Flor,’ is bilingual, English – Spanish, so it will be an excellent resource for a little one growing up in a bilingual and/or bicultural household.

The Flower Child es un libro de pasta dura que nos narra la historia de una niña flor que pierde a su mejor amigo.

¿Alguna vez perdiste un amigo en tu infancia? Si te sucedió a ti o a alguno de tus pequeños, podrás entender que esto puede ser un evento terrible y estresante.

Los niños pierden amigos debido a la reubicación, el divorcio, la enfermedad o incluso la muerte. Algunos pueden culparse a sí mismos por la pérdida e incluso pueden llegar a necesitar apoyo emocional para ayudarles a entender y lidiar con la pérdida. Esta es una herida que puede durar por muchos años.

En ‘The Flower Child – La Niña Flor’, Dashi ha perdido a su mejor amigo, Rousseau la Rosa. Rousseau nunca va a volver y Dashi tendrá que aprender a vivir con ese hecho.

La historia ayuda a los niños pequeños a aprender a manejar este tipo de pérdidas y demuestra, aunque parezca muy duro, que la vida sigue y que se pueden hacer nuevos amigos. El libro tiene un final muy feliz; un niño en esta situación se beneficiará de la perspectiva optimista.

Deborah también ha ilustrado el libro con sus bellas acuarelas. Tiene un estilo muy personal. ‘The Flower Child – La Niña Flor,’ es bilingüe, en inglés y español, por lo que será un recurso excelente para un pequeño que está creciendo en un hogar bilingüe o bicultural.

Kathryn Novak just doesn´t know how to rest.  Last time we talked with her, she was busy promoting her first book, “It stinks to be pink!” an excellent book to boost your child’s self-confidence.

That was just last November.

Since then, she has published two new books!

It was kind of hard to choose what to talk about this time. I finally settled for “EZ as 1-2-3, Come learn about bugs A-Z” because I loved her alphabet book; I loved the rhymes and I loved my kid laughing at the drawings and the text. Parents cherish the moment when their young kid “reads” the book back to them for the first time; you don´t know if they are really reading or if they are reciting the book by memory, or both. And let´s face it: it is a magical moment for the little guys too.

The special thing about this book is that it is all about… bugs! And who doesn’t love bugs? (Okay, my mom doesn’t love bugs, but apart from mom… who doesn’t like bugs?) Children are always thinking about little insects; they are intrigued by ants, butterflies, and worms; the whole package. So this book is an excellent start before further proceeding into the deeper study of insects, known as entomology.

Kathryn illustrates her own books and it was interesting witnessing her evolution as a plastic artist since “It stinks to be pink!” This book has a nice consistent theme and tone through all pages and colors are nicely balanced through all letters. I, as babies, love primary colors!

So if there is a small bug expert at home dying to learn the alphabet, by all means, go for “EZ as 1-2-3, Come learn about bugs A-Z”

Kathryn Novak no sabe cómo descansar. La última vez que hablamos con ella, estaba ocupada promocionando su primer libro titulado “It stinks to be pink!” un excelente recurso para aumentar la autoestima de tu hijo.

Y eso fue apenas en noviembre.

Desde entonces, ¡ha publicado dos nuevos libros!

Así que fue un poco difícil elegir de qué hablar esta vez. Finalmente me decidí por “EZ as 1-2-3, Come learn about bugs A-Z” porque me encantó su libro del alfabeto; me encantaron las rimas y me fascinó ver a mi hijo riéndose con los dibujos y el texto. Los padres atesoramos el momento en que nuestro chiquito nos “lee” el libro a nosotros por primera vez; no sabemos si realmente están leyendo o si están recitando el libro de memoria, o ambos. Y la verdad es que es un momento mágico para los pequeños también.

Lo especial de este libro es que es todo sobre… bichos ! ¿Y quién no ama a los insectos? (Bueno, a mi mamá no le encantan los insectos, pero aparte de mamá… ¿a quién no le gustan los bichos?) Los niños siempre están pensando en pequeños insectos; están intrigados por las hormigas, mariposas y gusanos; todo el paquete. Así que este libro es un excelente punto de partida antes de seguir adelante en el estudio más profundo de los insectos, la entomología.

Kathryn ilustra sus propios libros y fue interesante poder ver su evolución como artista plástico desde “It stinks to be pink!” Este libro tiene un tono y un tema recurrente y agradable  a través de todas las páginas y los colores están muy bien equilibrados en todas las letras. ¡A mí, como a bebés, me encantan los colores primarios!

Así que si hay un pequeño experto en bichitos en casa con ganas de aprender el alfabeto, compra “EZ as 1-2-3, Come learn about bugs A-Z”.
