Rionne starts walking again, even slower this time, until she finally disappears behind the shed. She lies down on the ground, and falls into a deep, deep slumber, that will last forever.

Mitch Albom wrote once that every family is a ghost story and that the death sit at our table long after they have gone.

There are other ghosts, besides the dead, and sometimes they can be more troublesome than dead people. Dysfunctional families create all kind of ghosts.

Little Dionne´s household is an extremely hostile environment: a father who left years ago; a mother who is emotionally absent and three older siblings, triplets, who seem to live only to humiliate Dionne.

Because of all this, Dionne creates her own imaginary twin, called Rionne, and when she proves to be too fragile for the task at hand, Lionne enters the stage.

Unfortunately, there are several flaws to the plan, the first one being… Lionne is a bitch. The second problem is that Lionne refuses to leave long after Dionne´s childhood is past and done. Lionne stays for good and she is still alive, well and around when Dionne is… 36.

How is life for a successful grownup with an imaginary friend? It is hell, especially if you want to date.

Dionne is never able to keep a relationship because Lionne messes everything up, usually by the second date.

When Greg shows up, Lionne is surprised to see him survive after the first date, and the second, and the third. When Dionne decides to move in with Greg, she is desperate and running out of resources… until Greg´s teenage daughters show up. Then Lionne decides she will use the little angels to help her destroy the good relationship that Dionne seems to have with Greg.

Will Dionne be able to get rid of her imaginary twin from hell or will she always be bent to this obscure entity´s whim?

Some have said the book is a comedy. I loved the book, but I did not find myself laughing all the time. Sure, there are some funny moments such as when, as a grownup, Dionne decides to visit her sisters and find out about their pathetic lives.  Still, the book has a casual, light tone and is very easy to read.

Coming from a dysfunctional family, I found myself rooting for Dionne all the way. She is a lovable, real character and I am sure all readers will grow fond of her.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good time watching Dionne try to undo all the problems created by Lionne. At points, the book seemed ideal for a movie and I would love to see Cameron Diaz playing Dionne and Lionne. I am sure you will think of other actresses as you read the book.

This book is an excellent work by Miv Evans and I can’t wait to read more stuff from her.

Rionne empieza a caminar de nuevo, aún más lento ahora, hasta que finalmente desaparece detrás del cobertizo. Se acuesta en el piso y cae en un profundo, profundo sueño, que durará por siempre.

 

Mitch Albom escribió una vez que cada familia es una historia de fantasmas y que los muertos se sientan a nuestra mesa mucho tiempo después de que se han ido.

Hay otros fantasmas, además de los muertos, y algunas veces pueden ser más problemáticos que las personas muertas. Las familias disfuncionales crean todo tipo de fantasmas.

El hogar de la pequeña Dionne es un ambiente extremadamente conflictivo: un padre que se fue hace muchos años; una madre emocionalmente ausente y tres hermanitas mayores, trillizas, cuyo único objetivo en la vida parece ser humillar a Dionne.

Por todo ello, Dionne se crea su propia gemela imaginaria, llamada Rionne, y cuando ésta resulta ser demasiado frágil para la tarea a mano, aparece Lionne.

Desgraciadamente, el plan tiene varias fallas. La primera es que Lionne es lo que en inglés se conoce como una… bitch. El segundo problema es que Lionne se rehúsa a irse aún cuando la niñez de Dionne ya terminó. Lionne sigue muy bien instalada y vivita y coleando cuando Dionne ya tiene… 36 años.

¿Cómo es la vida de un exitoso adulto que tiene un amigo imaginario? Es el infierno, especialmente si quieres conseguir pareja.

Dionne nunca puede mantener una relación porque Lionne lo echa todo a perder, generalmente en la segunda cita.

Cuando llega Greg, Lionne se sorprende de verlo sobrevivir la primera cita, y la segunda, y la tercera. Cuando Dionne decide mudarse a la casa de Greg, Lionne ya está desesperada y acabándose sus últimos recursos… hasta que las hijas adolescentes de Greg aparecen. Entonces Lionne decide que usará a las pequeñas angelitas para ayudarle a destruir la buena relación que Dionne parece tener con Greg.

¿Podrá Dionne librarse de su infernal hermana gemela imaginaria o estará siempre sujeta a los caprichos de esta oscura entidad?

Algunos han dicho que el libro es una comedia. A mí me encantó el libro, pero no me encontré riendo todo el tiempo. Claro, hay algunos momentos simpáticos como cuando, ya adulta, Dionne decide visitar a sus hermanas y descubre sus patéticas vidas. Aún así, el libro tiene un tono ligero y casual y es muy fácil de leer.

Viniendo de una familia disfuncional, me descubrí apoyando a Dionne todo el tiempo. Ella es un personaje real y adorable y estoy seguro de muchos lectores se encariñarán con ella.

Recomendaría este libro a todos los que quieran divertirse viendo a Dionne tratando de deshacer todos los problemas creados por Lionne. En algunos puntos, el libro parecería ideal para una película y a mí me encantaría ver a Cameron Diaz haciendo los papeles de Dionne y Lionne. Estoy seguro de que ustedes podrán pensar en muchas otras actrices conforme lean el libro.

Este libro en inglés es un excelente trabajo de Miv Evans; espero poder pronto leer nuevas cosas de ella.
