“Mommy and Mikel Go for a Walk”, by Ann Morris.

This book has become one of my favourite books for children!

This is a story told in a simple way by author Ann Morris, based on her own experience with her son Mikel, that will surely make readers smile, whether recalling episodes of the rides with their parents, or, as parents recalling the experiences with their children, or both!

Besides having colourful illustrations done by Avery Liell-Kok that tend to attract the attention of children, this story, which begins with a daily walk in the park, leads us through the adventure of knowledge and learning things that could be very common for adults, but that make great discoveries for children: from the name of a bird, to solving a mystery.

This is definitely an excellent reading choice to share with our little ones.

“Mikel y Mami dan un paseo,” por Ana Morris

¡Este libro se ha convertido en uno de mis favoritos para niños!

Esta es una historia narrada de forma sencilla por su autora Ana Morris, basada en su propia vivencia con su hijo Mikel y que seguramente hará sonreír a los lectores, ya sea recordando episodios de los paseos con sus padres, o bien, como padres recordando las vivencias con sus hijos o ¡ambos!

Además de contar con ilustraciones coloridas realizadas por Avery Liell-Kok, que suelen llamar la atención de los niños, esta historia, que comienza con un cotidiano paseo por el parque, nos va llevando por la aventura del conocimiento y aprendizaje de cosas que podrían resultar muy comunes para los adultos pero que para los niños representan grandes descubrimientos: desde el nombre de un pájaro, hasta resolver todo un misterio.

Definitivamente, esta es una excelente opción de lectura para compartir con nuestros pequeños.

The Sword of Demelza, An Australian Fantasy Adventure, by Jeanne E Rogers

There is an evil King in Demelza. His malevolence has reached all the way to Digby and Acadia, and has affected many.

Two of those many are in a mission to save a life; another one, in a quest to kill an enemy.

But they are not the only ones: many peasants and warriors have left their homes to reach Demelza with different goals. Some of them will become leaders; others will become heroes. Still, another one may find redemption.

But different as they may be, all lives in Demelza are bound by one common link: they all respond to fathers´ and mothers´ deeds and debts. The lives of the souls of Demelza are tied to the history of their ancestors, as exemplified by the words of Perry, the Spider:

“It’s hard to believe that a creature such as me would have something as lovely as a mum. The fact is, we all have them. They are so very necessary.” The spider lifted a leg to his head and tapped it in a thoughtful manner as he continued, “Funny thing is, and I must admit this, some mothers are ever so much better than others. Now my mum, the dear lady, she would carry me to the ends of the earth, she would. On her back no less.” He stared up into the dark foliage above, appearing to recall a lost memory. “It was a bit of a tight ride, as I remember, considering all the brothers and sisters who came along.”

Demelza reminds us of the importance of family; the wonderful experience that is having a mother, a father and sometimes, a sibling.

Demelza is a generational tale. Are not they also our lives?

Jeanne Rogers gives us the wonderful stories of Erik, Emma and Devon while teaching us about the animals in Australia: the two main characters are kowaries and Devon is a fox. The incredible illustrations done by Guy Atherfold show us how the animals would look if they were wearing clothes and carrying around swords and staffs.  At the end of the book, the little reader will find more information about all these amazing species and the first chapter of Demelza´s new book.

As Jeanne has said:

“If a young person reads my book and is inspired to learn more about the animals who roam the pages, then I have accomplished a worthwhile goal. Maybe, just maybe, they will be the generation dedicated to making a change”.

Hay un rey malvado en Demelza. Su maldad ha llegado hasta Digby y Acadia, y ha afectado a muchos.

Dos de esos muchos están en una misión para salvar una vida; otro más está en una cruzada para matar a un enemigo.

Pero ellos no son los únicos: muchos campesinos y guerreros han abandonado sus hogares para viajar a Demelza con diferentes metas. Algunos de ellos se convertirán líderes; otros en héroes. Y es posible que uno más encuentre la redención.

Pero aunque sean tan diferentes, todas las vidas en Demelza están unidas por un lazo en común: todas ellas responden a las hazañas y a las deudas de padres y de madres. Las vidas de las almas de Demelza están atadas a la historia de sus ancestros, como lo ejemplifican las palabras de Perry, la araña:

“Es difícil creer que una creatura como yo tendría algo tan adorable como una mamá. El caso es que todos las tenemos. Son muy necesarias.” La araña levantó una pata a su cabeza y se la golpeó pensativamente mientras seguía hablando, “Es una cosa curiosa, y debo admitir esto: algunas madres son mucho mejores que otras. Mi mamá, la adorable señora, me hubiera llevado al fin del mundo, lo hubiera hecho. En su espalda, nada menos.” Se quedó mirando el oscuro follaje arriba, como si estuviera recuperando una memoria perdida, “Era un viaje algo apretado, si recuerdo bien, considerando a todos los hermanos y hermanas que venían.”

Demelza nos recuerda lo importante que es una familia; la experiencia maravillosa de tener una madre, un padre, y algunas veces, algún hermano o hermana.

Demelza es una leyenda generacional. ¿No lo son también nuestras vidas?

Jeanne Rogers nos da las maravillosas historias de Erik, Emma y Devon, al mismo tiempo que nos enseña acerca de la fauna de Australia: los dos personajes principales son kowaries y Devon es un zorro. Las increíbles ilustraciones de Guy Atherfold nos muestran cómo se verían los animales si estuvieran usando ropa y portando espadas y bastones. Al final del libro, nuestros pequeños lectores encontrarán más información acerca de todas estas asombrosas especies australianas y el primer capítulo del nuevo libro en la serie de Demelza.

The UN estimates that 70 per cent of women in the planet experience violence in at least one of its many forms. It is also estimated that one in five women worldwide will become a victim of rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. (http://www.un.org/en/events/endviolenceday/pdf/UNiTE_TheSituation_EN.pdf)

One in five is just too many.

Women abuse knows no boundaries: it happens in all countries, regardless of social status or religion. It also takes place in many different ways. It can be very subtle if it is psychological and it can be more evident if it is physical, but these two are not the only forms of abuse and all of them are terrible.

Yet, we have to ask, what have we done to stop women abuse?

Celia John survived domestic violence and she did something: she wrote a wonderful book that is a resource for all women that are trapped today in an abusive situation.

In her easy to read book, Celia explains how to recognize if you are being abused; what kind of abuse you are being subjected to and how to get out of it.

Abused women have many obstacles to overcome; they may not have enough money to get out of the relationship; they may not have anywhere to go; they may no longer have friends or family or they may be just trying to protect their children.

Celia takes each of these different hurdles and dissects them one by one, providing not only solutions but also hope. She is the first one to admit that it is hard to break off from an abusive relationship. She is also the first one to admit that it can and it must be done.

To all the women who are suffering today, Celia has provided a wonderful tool to help them with her problems. Please read the book and get out of it, now that you can.

“Get Out If You Can, How To Escape An Abusive Relationship And Be Happy” por Celia John

Las Naciones Unidas estiman que el 70% de las mujeres en este planeta experimentan algún tipo de violencia. También se estima que una de cada cinco mujeres en el mundo será una víctima de violación o de un intento de violación. (http://www.un.org/en/events/endviolenceday/pdf/UNiTE_TheSituation_EN.pdf)

Una de cada cinco mujeres es demasiado.

El abuso a las mujeres no conoce las fronteras: pasa en todas las naciones, independientemente del estado social o de la religión. También pasa de diferentes maneras. Puede ser muy sutil si es psicológico y puede ser más evidente si es físico, pero estas dos son sólo dos formas de abuso y todas las formas son terribles.

Y aún así, nos tenemos que preguntar ¿qué hace cada uno de nosotros de manera personal para evitar el abuso a las mujeres?

Celia John sobrevivió a la violencia doméstica e hizo algo: escribió un libro maravilloso que es un recurso para todas las mujeres que están atrapadas hoy en una situación abusiva.

En su libro, que es muy sencillo de leer, Celia nos explica cómo reconocer si estás siendo víctima de un abuso; a qué tipo de abuso se te está sometiendo y cómo librarte de él.

Las mujeres que sufren abuso tienen muchos obstáculos en su camino; puede que no tengan suficiente dinero para escapar de la relación; puede que no tengan algún lugar a dónde ir; puede que ya no tengan amigos o familia a la cual recurrir o puede ser que estén intentando proteger a sus hijos.

En su libro, Celia toma cada uno de estos obstáculos y los va disecando uno por uno, dando no solamente soluciones, sino también esperanza. Ella es la primera que admite que es difícil salir de una relación abusiva. También es la primera en admitir que se debe de salir de ahí.
